The Pikes Peak Gold Rush brought an unsurpassed era of wealth and privilege to the untamed west. The wealthy member of Denver’s high society commissioned magnificent country homes, among these was the home of Denver philanthropist May Bonfils in what was to become the suburb of Lakewood. The home, christened Belmar, was modeled after a palace in Versailles. The home was torn down for civic expansion and the 1966-built Villa Italia Mall. Belmar Park remained as the legacy of Belmar. The new millennium brought a renaissance of culture and the mall gave way to Lakewood’s new downtown named after the estate from which it originated. Belmar is a model for the new “downtown” and “Main Street” trends that are replacing the cold concrete shopping malls. When fully complete, the shopping district will consist of 22 blocks of mixed retail, entertainment, office, and residential spaces, along with acres of parks, green space, and public plazas.

Belmar is home to cultural events, among these is the Market at Belmar featuring gardening series and chef demonstrations, Music on the Plaza, the annual Festival Italiano – an Italian wine and food festival, art galleries and forums.
