As the most famous shopping street in the world, Fifth Avenue in New York City is rife with every designer label imaginable. Surrounded by the opulence exuded by such high-end fashion, you’ll feel as though you need an entirely new wardrobe simply to walk through the doors of these magnificent boutiques. As you walk the blocks between 34th and 59th Streets, try to keep your jaw closed as you stare in awe at the marvel that is New York’s most illustrious retail destination.

Begin at the Plaza Hotel, famous for its appearance in countless films, and walk south. Bergdorf Goodman-favorite shopping haunt of Carrie Bradshaw-will be your first stop. Originating in 1899, this luxury goods department store became and still is the cornerstone of New York fashion. As you parade on down Fifth, admire the swank exteriors of Louis Vuitton, Van Cleef & Arpels, Bulgari, Prada and Fendi before you step into the netherworld of designer fashion and high-end luxury overseen by perfectly coiffed sales people. Channel your inner Audrey Hepburn as you pass the Tiffany & Co. store immortalized in the classic Breakfast at Tiffany’s. After you have taken a sufficient number of photos to prove that you were indeed there, move on to the glamour of Henri Bendel, Emanuel Ungaro, Gucci and Fortunoff. As you pass by, be sure to experience the creative east meets west fusion of jewelry, art pieces, clothing, home decor and tea items at the Japanese specialty store Takashimaya. You’ll notice that sprinkled between the designer boutiques, national chains like Banana Republic, Sephora and Kenneth Cole exist. Though their merchandise is much less expensive than their French and Italian neighbors, the facades of these stores had to undergo extensive reconstructive surgery in order to appear presentable in a Fifth Avenue location.

In 2008, Forbes Magazine rated Fifth Avenue as the most expensive shopping street in the world. Needless to say, in true “Confessions of a Shopaholic” style, you can easily max out your credit cards before you even bat an eyelash, so buyers beware. However, even if you leave this resplendent shopping street without having made a single purchase (an entirely unlikely probability), you’ll still consider yourself fortunate to have joined the millions of people that have perambulated down the sidewalks, hungrily eyeing the sumptuous wares available on famed Fifth Avenue.
