Haight Ashbury District - San Francisco

Haight Ashbury District - San Francisco

This once groovy neighborhood famous throughout the 1960s and 1970s for free love and psychedelic experiences has retained a semblance of its bohemian charm. Quaint old Victorian homes line the streets, melding unexpectedly with kaleidoscopic murals leftover from the Summer of Love. The Haight-Ashbury district, or the Haight as it is affectionately called, is cuddled up against Golden Gate Park, Western Addition, and the Castro district among others. Since it’s hippie heyday, the Haight has become a hot place to score great deals and offbeat brands, and offers some of the best shoe stores in the city.

This vibrant area of San Francisco is home to a plethora of both men’s and women’s boutiques overflowing with enviable goods. Ambiance (1458 Haight St.) was declared to have “The best selection of pretty dresses,” by the SF Bay Guardian for the past three years running, and was voted “Best Boutique in San Francisco” by Lucky Magazine readers in 2008. Despite the postage stamp size of super-cute women’s boutique Behind the Post Office (1510 Haight St.), the inventory is superbly chosen making it difficult to leave without whipping out the plastic to buy yourself a little indulgence. Looking for something more personalized? Your Skirt (1748 Haight St.) lets shoppers choose from a myriad of designer styles and luxe fabrics and then creates a skirt tailored to your every whim and curve. If shoes are your vice, check out Villains Shoes (1672 Haight St.) and Shoe Biz (1420 Haight St.). Both carry men’s and women’s styles, and may just have the most unique and hard to find shoe brands in all of San Francisco.

In addition to the stellar selection of apparel and shoe boutiques, the Haight offers a wide array of jewelry, music and other specialty stores. A plethora of delicious restaurants also line this popular avenue, many of which cater to those who prefer organic, vegetarian, or vegan fare.

Whether you visit the Haight for the history or the shopping high, the sheer energy of the neighborhood combined with the diversity of boutiques and restaurants will leave you feelin’ some love of your own.
