Newbury Street - Boston
Originally part of Boston Harbor, the area around Newbury Street (known as the Back Bay) was filled in with dirt and debris in the mid 19th century to create more land for development. Completed in 1882, Newbury Street quickly became the most fashionable neighborhood in Boston. Now known as the “Rodeo Drive of the East,” Newbury Street boasts a collection of designer boutiques, cafes, galleries and salons in a beautiful, European boulevard inspired setting.
Boston’s glamorous glitterati wouldn’t condescend to shopping anywhere other than this uber upscale district. High-end fashion icons Marc Jacobs (81 Newbury St.), Chanel Boutique (5 Newbury St.), Burberry (2 Newbury St.), Juicy Couture (12 Newbury St.), Betsey Johnson (201 Newbury St.) and Nanette Lepore (119 Newbury St.) all have outposts on this world-class shopping street. Designer (read: expensive) children’s clothing boutiques also line the wide avenue. You’ll find clothing and toys at the adorably named Boston Baked Bean (291 Newbury St.), the ultimate in soft cotton apparel at Petit Bateau (171 Newbury St.), colorful play clothes at Oilily Boston (32 Newbury St.) and hip kids’ dungarees at True Religion Brand Jeans (119 Newbury St.). A small yet well-edited selection of home furnishings purveyors can also be found here. Everything from an area rug to an antique-style telephone can be found at perennially popular Pottery Barn (122 Newbury St.) while luxurious bedding can be found at Madura Company (144 Newbury St.), Pratesi (110 Newbury St.) and Down to Basics (249 Newbury St.). Many other stores offer shoes, jewelry, handbags, confectionary, cards and gifts.
Over 35 restaurants and cafes line the eight block stretch that makes up this fabulous retail district. So, when you’ve shopped ‘til you’ve nearly dropped, make your way to the comfortable confines of French restaurant Sonsie (327 Newbury St.), Mediterranean La Voile (261 Newbury St.), Italian Ciao Bella (240A Newbury St.) or Japanese Snappy Sushi (144 Newbury St.) among the many alternatives.
Both locals and tourists alike will appreciate the history, culture, fashion and dining that make Newbury Street one of Boston’s most treasured attractions.
